ABOUT ABOUT

The Blue Ridge Music Center presents Missy Raines & Allegheny + None of the Above live in concert at its outdoor amphitheater on the Blue Ridge Parkway (Milepost 213) just south of Galax, Va., just north of Mount Airy, N.C. and just east of Sparta, N.C.

Raines is a bluegrass trailblazer. She has received multiple awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association, and has won the Bass Player of the Year 10 times, making her the most awarded musician in the category.

Her long and adventurous musical journey has been informed by the southern Appalachian and Mid-Atlantic bluegrass of her youth. As a teen, Raines soaked up the sounds of The Country Gentlemen, The Seldom Scene, The Johnson Mountain Boys, and the other neo-progressive groups that propelled bluegrass music forward in the 1970s. In the early years of her career, she spent hours learning from and playing with many first-generation bluegrass legends.

Though Raines was raised on bluegrass, it is her unrelenting urge to immerse herself into other sonic realms that has led to numerous lauded collaborations in the areas of Americana, country, and folk.

Allegheny, her touring band, is named for the region of West Virginia where Raines grew up. The group features some of the brightest young stars in bluegrass today with Ben Garnett on guitar, Eli Gilbert on banjo, Ellie Hakanson on fiddle, and Tristan Scroggins on mandolin.

With a cultivated sound that is traditional and hard-driving at its core, Missy Raines & Allegheny celebrate both the history and evolution of the “high, lonesome sound,” walking the fine line between respect and rebellion.

Working with traditional bluegrass instrumentation, central North Carolina's None of the Above creates a unique sound that includes elements from bluegrass, Americana, alternative, folk, rock, and their own original material. The band maintains its traditional roots while drawing on each member’s interpretations and contributions, ultimately producing a sound that encapsulates the name, None of the Above.
